Energy & Utility Construction Capabilities

Our Capabilities

Canyon is a North American leader in utility construction, partnering with regulated utilities, municipalities, and industrial operators to build and maintain the infrastructure and utilities that keep power, gas, and data flowing 24/7. With operating roots that stretch back 115 years and a workforce of 8,600 craft professionals supported by more than 13,000 fleet assets, we combine local agility with the resources of the #2 firm on Engineering-News Record’s Top-600 Utility list. Our purpose is simple yet ambitious: Connecting People to Power. We do so safely, reliably, and with an eye on the next generation of energy solutions.

Canyon’s holistic service portfolio supports our customers’ ever-increasing energy and infrastructure demands while surpassing today’s safety benchmarks. Our BLS Industry Comparison TRIR & DART safety scores outperform industry averages, demonstrating our commitment to the resources and training needed to achieve world-class safety.

Natural Gas Infrastructure

Canyon installs and rehabilitates high-pressure transmission mains, distribution pipelines, regulator stations, and cathodic protection systems. Our construction capabilities include civil works, trenchless technologies, such as horizontal directional drilling (HDD), cross compression, and compressor stations. Recent projects include the installation of the 18-mile Kokomo Fusion steel pipeline, the replacement of a 30″ high-pressure pipeline across downtown Toronto, the replacement and installation of over 500 miles of main and replacement pipe for a natural gas utility customer, and a long-term partnership replacing aging high-pressure pipelines across Utah.

Canyon minimizes surface disruption while future-proofing communities, whether they use horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to install fiber or electric cables beneath major waterways or replace aging water mains. Our underground distribution capabilities won the NECA 2024 Project Excellence Award. Examples of recent projects include the installation of a nearly 2,000-feet deep sewer pipe at the Gary/Chicago Airport and the installation of 16 miles of fiber conduit for a Maryland data center.

Emergency Response Overview Graphic

Emergency Response & Storm Restoration

Extreme weather is the new normal, and utilities and municipalities need partners who can mobilize quickly. Canyon’s emergency response maintains real-time visibility of crews and equipment across 46 states and 4 Canadian provinces, allowing deployment within hours. We can immediately mobilize specialized crews and equipment to integrate rapid assessment with complete storm restoration. Canyon has participated in multiple storm response efforts, such as Hurricane Helene, which is a testament to our fast response ethos.

Our Approach

  1. Plan & Survey: We obtain all necessary regulatory permits before project commencement. In design, we apply GIS-enabled route selection, digital twin modeling, and constructability reviews to mitigate cost and schedule risk.
  2. Mobilize & Install: Crews mobilize our specialized equipment along with certified welders, linemen, and operators to self-perform the work , supported by either union or open-shop labor to match regional needs.
  3. Test & Commission: New electrical systems tests, hydrostatic pressure tests, and SCADA platforms validate asset integrity before commissioning.
  4. Restore: We restore sites to their original or improved condition through vegetation management, hydroseeding, and hard surface restoration.
  5. Maintain: Post construction, we conduct inspection, quality checks, right-of-way maintenance, and overhead and underground maintenance for gas and electric assets, including substations and distribution lines.

Integrated Project Management & Technology

Canyon uses cloud-based platforms to unify schedules, costs, and field data. Engineers create AutoCAD models that integrate GIS mapping, then push approved designs into our cloud Customer Work Management Information System (WMIS). Field personnel capture as-built data, geotagged photos, and electronic permits, logging them into FOMS. Automated validations flag gaps, analytics optimize resources, while client dashboards enable same-day approvals. The result is fewer change orders, faster close-outs, and transparent collaboration with clients and regulators.

Safety Quality Graphic

Safety & Quality Commitment

Canyon’s behavior-based safety programs and our BLS-based safety benchmarks ensure everyone goes home safely. Thousands of training hours and the use of certified technicians only reinforce our sustainable safety culture. Indeed, while the national TRIR benchmark stands at 2.4 (BLS, 2024), multiple Canyon projects had zero recordable incidents.

Why Choose Canyon?

  • Scale & Stability: Coast-to-coast footprint, NYSE-listed (CTRI) public markets financial strength, and average customer relationships of 24 years.
  • Union / Non-Union Flexibility: Labor adaptability supports regional requirements without compromising craft quality.
  • Rapid Mobilization: Proven ability to marshal crews and asset fleets for storms, wildfires, and critical outages.
  • Innovation Leadership: Early adopter of LiDAR-enabled design and engineering, GIS-driven work packages, digital twins, and data analytics.
